Peter Townsends death has been confirmed by the family as the man who held the premiership from 1993 to 2001.
Mr Townsend died on Tuesday after a long battle with lung cancer.
He was 81.
A family spokesperson confirmed the news.
“Peter Townsend passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Brisbane,” a spokesperson said.
“We are grateful to the many people who have supported us through this difficult time and for the support we have received from the public in our efforts to raise money to assist Peter’s family during this time.”
Mr Townsends son Peter, now a lawyer, is a partner at law firm Wigmore and Sons.
Peter Townsends wife, Janet, was also a member of the Cabinet under Mr Townsend and is now a senator.
